NFLA holds the standards for fitness certification in Canada. By becoming certified through NSFA you receive the highest standard of fitness certification that is transferable across Canada. Fitness is a growing industry and by becoming a certified fitness professional you become a part of this movement. Fitness professionals are a vital component of our society as they play an important role in increasing physical activity levels and the health of Canadians. Training courses that enable you to be a fitness leader involve fitness theory, wellness leader, group fitness leadership, resistance training leadership, personal fitness trainer leadership, older adult fitness leadership, and aqua fitness leadership. Attention all yogis!! Due to the initial success of our trial program St. Mary’s Recreation is pleased to offer more yoga classes. Seniors Fitness Classes Stay fit in the New Year with low impact fitness classes. Physical activity is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your physical health, mental health and over all quality of life as you age. Each class focuses on the importance of muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular health and flexibility.  Classes will begin Wednesday January 11th at 1:00-2:00 at the Goshen Community Centre and run until the end of February. Train Like The Pro’s Ready to shed those last 10 pounds? We have the class for you! St. Mary’s recreation is offering an athletic training inspired fitness class. This unique combination of cardio, muscle confusion, agility and plyometric training will have you stronger, faster and most importantly healthier! Learn to Run Program

Time to start thinking about that new years resolution! What a better way to start then by learning to run a 5km. This program is a beginner level program that will teach you the basics of running, from techniques to foot wear we have it covered!! Join us at the Liscomb Legion Thursdays at 10:00 am starting January 10th to give it a try, you will be glad you did!

Medium to Low-Medium Impact Fitness Class

The Municipality of St. Mary’s will be offering low-medium intensity exercise classes in a number of locations throughout the municipality.  Classes are specially designed to incorporate strength, flexibility and cardiovascular training at an intensity level that works for you! PORT BICKERTON EXERCISE CLASS This exercise class will keep you on the move and staying fit. It is low impact to medium fitness level so it is for all ages. Donna Jordan will lead you through exercises Fridays at 10 am for the month of February to fit your needs. Please call the recreation department to register. $5 per person. 522-2598.


Walking & Aerobic Classes

 

NEW exercise classes have been introduced in the Municipality. Classes begin with 10 minutes of walking followed by some light weight training for the whole body.  Don't forget to bring your sneakers, a water bottle, a set of weights and a yoga mat (or something similar).  If you don't have weights that's ok grab a pair of soup cans.

PORT BICKERTON OPEN EXERCISE As Port Bickerton just opened a new community center, there is exercise equipment in there now for you to be able to use to stay healthy and active. The community center will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12 noon for you to come workout with the exercise equipment. Before you go, you need to contact Ardith Dodge and fill out a disclaimer. Her number is 364-2967. There will be a $2 charge on an honour system as well. If there is interest in other times to go and workout, please contact at Ardith Dodge to expand the program.

Zumba is a mixture of Latin and International music mixed with dance that together create a challenging, yet fun and effective fitness routine for participants of all ages. The Zumba workout features aerobic dancing as well as fitness training broken down into fast and slow rhythms that help tone and sculpt your body. Working the gluts, the entire leg, firming your arms, hitting the abs and the aerobic component is great for your Heart! It is "FUN AND EASY TO DO" allowing Zumba participants to achieve long-term health benefits. Zumba is a "feel-happy" workout that is great for both the body and the mind. What is Zumba? Zumba is an aerobic routine for people that hate to exercise, which is the 90%, but loves the party. So join the party and Maria Tate from south America will teach you different basic steps (Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Calypso, Mambo, ChaCha, Zamba and Reageton) and enjoy a workout with fun!!

What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for: the zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. Active older adults want camaraderie, excitement and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule. Zumba Gold is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly, and most of all, fun. Our certified instructor will lead you through this in a way that everyone can do it.

PUMPING HEARTS (HEARTS IN MOTION)
St. Mary’s Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Community Cardiovascular Hearts in Motion (CCHIM) organization, partnered up to continue to keep this excellent program going. The fitness centre will continue to run a similar program to keep people healthy and active and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. St. Mary’s Recreation Staff will be in the fitness centre to guide participants through their workout routines and provide knowledge towards a healthy lifestyle.
What Did the Hearts and Motion Program Offer? The Community Cardiovascular Hearts in Motion Program offered: Individual Assessment by a Nurse, Physiotherapist and Dietitian, Supervised Group Exercise Program, Nutrition Assessment and Personal Nutrition Plan, Lifestyle Change, Realistic Goal Setting Approach, Home Exercise Plan, and Educational Sessions Designed to Improve Your Lifestyle. The educational sessions include topics such as: Risk Factors for Heart Disease, Heart Healthy Eating, Exercise, Medications, Managing Stress, and Coping Skills. How long was the Program? This was a twelve week program, and each week you are required to attend two one-hour exercise classes. Also, you must commit to a one-hour education session per week. Who Can Attend? This program is for people with heart disease, cerebral vascular disease (i.e., stroke), and peripheral vascular disease (i.e., poor circulation to the legs). The program is also for people who have risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. To find out if you can take part in the Community Cardiovascular Hearts in Motion Program consult your family doctor and ask for a referral. On the other hand, anyone can attend the Pumping Hearts Program that St. Mary’s Department puts on, it is just a continuation to keep people active. Why Should You Attend? Potential Benefits: Improved Blood Cholesterol Levels, Improved Blood Pressure, Improved Strength and Exercise Tolerance, Decreased Symptoms of Angina and Shortness of Breath, Decreased Risk of Developing Heart Disease or Further Complications, Decreased Stress, Healthier Weight, and a Better Quality of Life.
Where is the Program Located? The CCHIM Program is mobile and is offered in one community at a time throughout the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority. The CCHIM program has been offered in the following communities: Guysborough, Canso, Antigonish, Port Hawkesbury, St. Peter’s, and now in Sherbrooke. Please call the recreation department if attending.

St. Mary's Recreation Department created a new program called ST. MARY'S IN MOTION. It is a chance to have access to the fitness centre Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 11 am. $2 Drop-in fee. This program will run until Feb. 29, 2012.

ST. MARY’S IN MOTION Staying active and healthy is an important part of an everyday lifestyle, therefore we need to keep on the move and be involved in physical activity. So, St. Mary’s Recreation Department will have the Fitness Centre open for you to come and exercise every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. This will run until Feb. 29, 2012. $2 per person each time you come. There will be a staff member there to help and guide you through relevant exercises to help your needs.
