St. Mary's Trails

The St. Mary's Trails Association was formed in October 2007.  The aim of this committee is to complete an unfinished part of the Trans Canada Trail through the District of St. Mary's from the District of Guysborough/St. Mary's line to the Pictou County line in East River St. Mary's, NS.

An update was submitted earlier in 2008, we stated that we had made slow but steady progress with DNR approval of the trail.  Currently we are in the process of final consultation with landowners and as this process could take considerable time, we have decided to proceed in phases.  Phase one will be the completion of the trail from the Dist. of Guysborough/St. Mary's line to Hwy #7 at Aspen.  Phase one is all crown land.

In December 2008 we requested DNR provide us with a letter of Local Authority to enable us to apply for funds and we have recently received this letter.  Our next step will be to apply for the necessary funding to get started and hopefully we will begin clearing the right-of-way in phase one when the snow is gone.

Walking Trails

The Municipality of St. Mary's Recreation Department is looking into the fesability of developing walking trails through the municipality.

The plan is to develop a circular walking paths in each district of St. Mary's.  These paths will include 1 - 2km trails for everyday walking along with half to full day hiking trails.  The final goal will be to connect all trails offering the opporunity to walk the municipality.

The Recreation office is looking to partner with many community groups in the municipality on this project.  At this time we are looking at focal points in each distict that we would like the trails to pass by.  If you have any comments or points that should be part of the plan please contact the Recreation office.
