PLANNING & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

The Municipality is seeking an individual to join our Administrative team in the position of Planning & Economic Development officer. This is a permanent full time position.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Planning & Economic Development Officer will coordinate all planning initiatives within the municipality and lead efforts in facilitating economic and business development to secure growth and to increase local employment opportunities. The position will encourage appropriate planning, promote new business opportunities and provide support to existing businesses in the area to help with retention/ expansion efforts and long term economic sustainability for the district.

PLANNING – The position is responsible for review and updating of all municipal planning documents for the Municipality of the District of Saint Mary's (MODSM). Planning documents include the Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-Law, Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ISCP), Source Water Protection Plan, Climate Change Action Plan, Emergency Management Plan, Economic Development Plan and the Strategic Plan. Other plans may be added as required.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – The position is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating economic development initiatives within the Municipality of the District of Saint Mary's (MODSM). The successful candidate will prepare and keep current an Economic Development Plan for the municipality, identifying and recommending areas and sectors to focus on for potential growth immediately and over the medium to longer term. He/she will work independently on some files, while other files will require working as part of a team with other municipal staff, federal and provincial agencies and private sector businesses.

Education and Qualifications:
Candidates with a degree in one of the following areas; Business, Marketing, Planning, Economic Development or a related field of study, and five years' experience in planning and/or rural economic development are desired. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered. The successful candidate will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, be familiar with municipal government operations and be able to demonstrate knowledge on the role of local government in promoting business development. GIS mapping and planning experience as well as experience in project management and oversight of consultants would be considered a benefit in fulfilling the requirements of the position.

Planning and Economic Development Officer Job Description

Part-time Job Opportunity - Janitor

St. Mary's Municipality is seeking custodial/janitorial services for the Municipal Administration building and Sherbrooke Library. Successful candidate will be responsible to sweep, mop, dust, empty waste, clean and disinfect washrooms and fixtures, etc. Previous cleaning experience considered an asset. Lifeguard/Summer Recreation Programmer

Reports to: Director of Community Development and Recreation
Pay: $11.25 an hour
Hours: 30 hours a week
Length: 9 Weeks

Position Summary:
Working under the direction of the Director of Community Development and Recreation, the Lifeguard/Summer Recreation Programmer's main focus will be to provide lifeguard services during swimming lessons located at the Liscombe Lodge. Recreation programming duties will take place during times when lessons are not in session.

Duties:
- Overall safety of participants at swimming lessons and/or other aquatics programming
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions
- Ensuring lifesaving and teaching equipment is up to standard and maintained
- Oversee swimming programming at summer camps
- Assist summer day camp leaders at Day Camps (when swimming lessons are not underway)
- Assist Recreation Staff at special events (Canada Day, 55+ Games)
- Liaison with Liscombe Lodge staff during programming at the facility
- Additional program leadership as assigned

Education Requirements:
- Successful applicant MUST be attending or returning to an educational institution in the Fall of 2018.
- National Lifeguard certification is required.
- High Five training would be considered an asset.

Skills and special knowledge:
- Must possess strong supervisory skills
- Must possess organizational and administrative skills and ability to multi-task.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of team

Summer Recreation Leader

Reports to: Summer Recreation Manager/Active Living Coordinator
Pay: $11.00 an hour
Hours: 30 hours a week
Length: 9 Weeks

Position Summary:
Working under the direction of the Summer Recreation Manager, the Summer Recreation Leader will be tasked with delivering recreational programming throughout St. Mary's during the summer season.

Duties:
- Deliver summer programming at day camps throughout the municipality during the summer months.
- Ensure the safety of children during all programming
- Maintain recreation equipment during programming
- Ensure that every child has the proper registration form completed
- Assist in the delivery of programming for teens and early years in the Municipality
- Ensure all facilities are returned to satisfactory condition after programs are complete
- Help to deliver special events as required (ie. Canada Day, 55+ Games)
- To fill out and turn in expected paperwork and reports
- Attend any necessary training for position
- Other duties that may be assigned

Education Requirements:
- Applicant must be of legal working age (14 years old for this position)
- Successful applicant MUST be attending or returning to an educational institution in the Fall of 2018.
- High Five training would be considered an asset

Contract Swim Instructor

Position Summary:
Working under the direction of the Community Development & Recreation Director, the Swim Instructor's main focus will be to lead the delivery of a quality water safety program aimed at the development and implementation of swimming lessons.

Duties:
- Leading the instruction and evaluation of swim classes
- Ensuring compliance with Red Cross Programs
- Ensure all administrative requirements are completed in a timely manner including lesson plan and report card preparation

Education Requirements:
- Water Safety Instructor Certification is required.
- High Five training would be considered an asset.

Skills and special knowledge:
- Must possess strong supervisory and Leadership skills
- Must possess organizational and administrative skills and ability to multi-task.

Active Transportation

Active Transportation refers to any form of human powered transportation such as walking, cycling, using a wheelchair, skateboarding or snowshoeing. The Municipality is currently working on an Active Transportation Plan to connect Old Road Hill to Hwy. 7 and Main Street. Improving accessibility will provide opportunities for safe travel for visitors and residents.
